Obama’s Health Secretary Sebelius Proves Need for Insurance Sales across State Lines

By Cassandra Effect, February 9, 2010 10:06 am

Anthem BCBS of California to raise premiums by 39% in 2011!

In an attempt to plug into populist anger against high insurance costs, US Health and Human Services Cabinet Secretary Kathleen Sebilus accidentally proves that when a company has monopoly power, its prices are not held down by market pressures. Any chance that Obama, the Constitutional Scholar, would will be willing to consider using the Commerce Clause to open states up to interstate competition for health insurance? Don’t count on it.

From Reuters:

“These extraordinary increases are up to 15 times faster than inflation and threaten to make health care unaffordable for hundreds of thousands of Californians, many of whom are already struggling to make ends meet in a difficult economy,” Sebelius wrote to Anthem Blue Cross President Leslie Margolin.

While it was unclear what, if any, steps the U.S. health department could take, Sebelius said she was “very disturbed” and was “closely monitoring” the Anthem situation. State authorities in California — the nation’s most populated state — are also investigating the reported rate hike.

Green Police Super Bowl Ad – Truth is Stranger than Fiction?

By Cassandra Effect, February 7, 2010 8:44 pm

If only this commercial was a spoof on reality.

Washington DC has a tax on plastic grocery bagsMany, many , many other places have similar laws

In San Francisco people are required by law to compost waste and recycle.  Offenders are subject to fines.

The city by the bay also has a ban on plastic water bottles.   Other countries are reaching this madness level as well.

Incandescent light bulbs will be phased out in the US starting in 2012.     In Europe they already have banned these and are offering money to people to snitch on stores which sell the outlawed bulbs.  You will be stuck with those crappy compact flourescent blubs (CFLs) in the near future.

And in this madness, Audi is selling its “green” car.   Somehow I am not comforted.  And I feel a lot less free.

Census Superbowl Commercial Sells Government Incompetence

We paid $2.5 Million to advertise the fact the the government is a bunch of idiots – sheesh

And yes, I get the fact they are trying to be hip and edgy ala The Office / 30 Rock / Parks and Recreation, but this is the freaking census!  The fact that we have to advertise to people of a basic constitutional function in a fun and hip way is truly ridiculous. Do we need hip ads to get people to sign up for the Selective Service too now?

Go HERE for the complete series of these “Payton Schlewitt” ads – yes, there’s more than the one you saw during the Super Bowl…

Breaking: Adam Andrzejewski attending Tea Party Convention!

By Cassandra Effect, February 6, 2010 11:17 am

GOP Illinois Governor hopeful, Adam Andrzejewski is attending the Saturday portion of the Nashville TN Tea Party Convention.   I had the distinct honor of bumping into him at the Chicago airport at 6am this morning.    he was surprised that someone from Tennessee would be familiar with his campaign.    We had a great talk on the plane and I offered him a dose of southern hospitality and gave him a ride to his hotel!

Adam is an amazing guy – a reformer, principled, and  focused on solving the problems at home in Illinois.  Expect to see more from Adam in the future as he works to drive real reform in Illinois!

Erick Erickson wrote an excellent piece on Adam here

hit his website – www.adamforillinois.com  and make a donation to his campaign – they still have expenses and we need folks like Adam!

Muslim Mafia Book Review

By Cassandra Effect, January 29, 2010 11:28 pm

Book Review of Muslim Mafia from Cassandra Effect reader, Mark Newton

David Gaubatz, former Agent Air Force Office of Special Investigations and Paul Sperry, author of Infiltration,  combine their efforts to write Muslim Mafia. This book came out in hard back in 2009. I highly recommend this important book to anyone interested in  understanding the Islamic war against the United Stated and rest of the non – Islamic world.
The authors take you through evidence obtained during an undercover  investigation exposing a very organized conspiracy of CAIR (Counsel American Islamic Relations),  ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) and many other front groups  to infiltrate our law enforcement and government agencies with the purpose of undermining our government.  These groups pose as non-radical Muslim organizations but upon closer investigation are funded by null and other radical groups. They are a very organized network of terrorists training and support organizations right here on our own soil. These groups aggressively use our own media for their pro Islamic propaganda and to put a peaceful face on their radical ideology. They also engage in aggressive efforts to silence their critics using political correctness against company, government, and individual targets. Additionally they are fund raising centers sending money raised in the United States to groups around the world known to engage in terrorist activity. These undercover investigators have uncovered documents detailing this highly organized effort to use our own U.S. freedoms, laws,  and political correctness to undermine our nation.  This is a well documented, eye opening, and alarming book definitely worth your time!

The Ultimate Irony from Obama’s State of the Union Speech

By Cassandra Effect, January 28, 2010 9:55 pm

Of all the things that were wrong with Barack Obama’s SOTU speech yesterday, nothing could hold a candle to his tout the Stimulus Bill

“The plan that has made all of this possible, from the tax cuts to the jobs, is the Recovery Act. That’s right — the Recovery Act, also known as the stimulus bill. Economists on the left and the right say this bill has helped save jobs and avert disaster. But you don’t have to take their word for it. Talk to the small business in Phoenix that will triple its work force because of the Recovery Act. Talk to the window manufacturer in Philadelphia who said he used to be skeptical about the Recovery Act, until he had to add two more work shifts just because of the business it created.”

This window company he mentions is Serious Materials, which is a firm which has benefited from focused lobbying to get government money for the Stimulus money for “Weatherization” and   The Weatherization program is a simply a wealth transfer, income qualifed program

The irony is how this relates to Bastiat’s Broken Window Fallacy:  specifically – the tax money being used to “weatherize” homes and offer tax credits on replacement windows.  These tax credit are wealth transfers of taxpayers to individuals who purchase qualifying windows, and then ultimately a wealth transfer to the window company.   All well and good for the window company and the homeowner with the new windows, but a loss of wealth that could have been used for other things by all the other taxpayers.  Thus is the taxes were lowered, then the money may have been used to go out to dinner, buy a new TV, or anything else.   Read below to truly grasp the horror and irony of President Obama’s examples:

I. THE BROKEN WINDOW

Have you ever witnessed the anger of the good shopkeeper, James B., when his careless son happened to break a square of glass? If you have been present at such a scene, you will most assuredly bear witness to the fact, that every one of the spectators, were there even thirty of them, by common consent apparently, offered the unfortunate owner this invariable consolation – “It is an ill wind that blows nobody good. Everybody must live, and what would become of the glaziers if panes of glass were never broken?”

Now, this form of condolence contains an entire theory, which it will be well to show up in this simple case, seeing that it is precisely the same as that which, unhappily, regulates the greater part of our economical institutions.

Suppose it cost six francs to repair the damage, and you say that the accident brings six francs to the glazier’s trade – that it encourages that trade to the amount of six francs – I grant it; I have not a word to say against it; you reason justly. The glazier comes, performs his task, receives his six francs, rubs his hands, and, in his heart, blesses the careless child. All this is that which is seen.

But if, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion, as is too often the case, that it is a good thing to break windows, that it causes money to circulate, and that the encouragement of industry in general will be the result of it, you will oblige me to call out, “Stop there! your theory is confined to that which is seen; it takes no account of that which is not seen.”

It is not seen that as our shopkeeper has spent six francs upon one thing, he cannot spend them upon another. It is not seen that if he had not had a window to replace, he would, perhaps, have replaced his old shoes, or added another book to his library. In short, he would have employed his six francs in some way, which this accident has prevented.

Let us take a view of industry in general, as affected by this circumstance. The window being broken, the glazier’s trade is encouraged to the amount of six francs; this is that which is seen. If the window had not been broken, the shoemaker’s trade (or some other) would have been encouraged to the amount of six francs; this is that which is not seen.

And if that which is not seen is taken into consideration, because it is a negative fact, as well as that which is seen, because it is a positive fact, it will be understood that neither industry in general, nor the sum total of national labour, is affected, whether windows are broken or not.

Now let us consider James B. himself. In the former supposition, that of the window being broken, he spends six francs, and has neither more nor less than he had before, the enjoyment of a window.

In the second, where we suppose the window not to have been broken, he would have spent six francs on shoes, and would have had at the same time the enjoyment of a pair of shoes and of a window.

Now, as James B. forms a part of society, we must come to the conclusion, that, taking it altogether, and making an estimate of its enjoyments and its labours, it has lost the value of the broken window.

When we arrive at this unexpected conclusion: “Society loses the value of things which are uselessly destroyed;” and we must assent to a maxim which will make the hair of protectionists stand on end – To break, to spoil, to waste, is not to encourage national labour; or, more briefly, “destruction is not profit.”

What will you say, Monsieur Industriel — what will you say, disciples of good M. F. Chamans, who has calculated with so much precision how much trade would gain by the burning of Paris, from the number of houses it would be necessary to rebuild?

I am sorry to disturb these ingenious calculations, as far as their spirit has been introduced into our legislation; but I beg him to begin them again, by taking into the account that which is not seen, and placing it alongside of that which is seen. The reader must take care to remember that there are not two persons only, but three concerned in the little scene which I have submitted to his attention. One of them, James B., represents the consumer, reduced, by an act of destruction, to one enjoyment instead of two. Another under the title of the glazier, shows us the producer, whose trade is encouraged by the accident. The third is the shoemaker (or some other tradesman), whose labour suffers proportionably by the same cause. It is this third person who is always kept in the shade, and who, personating that which is not seen, is a necessary element of the problem. It is he who shows us how absurd it is to think we see a profit in an act of destruction. It is he who will soon teach us that it is not less absurd to see a profit in a restriction, which is, after all, nothing else than a partial destruction. Therefore, if you will only go to the root of all the arguments which are adduced in its favour, all you will find will be the paraphrase of this vulgar saying – What would become of the glaziers, if nobody ever broke windows?

Free Internet Course on American Constitutional Law

By Cassandra Effect, January 11, 2010 8:18 am

U[dated 1/28/10 - Its not free anymore, but is priced at $5 per lecture ($250 for all 10).   Still a good price for what amounts to a college level course on constitutional law.

Henry Holzer, Professor Emeritus at Brooklyn Law School  is offering a FREE on line course on American Constitutional Law!  It starts on the week of January 17th through a ten lecture series he will post on his blog HERE for the next ten weeks.

Henry is offering a paid option where you can participate via skype live during the lecture - info on the lecture is below and full info can be downloaded HERE

Like many other Americans, I am deeply concerned about our nation’s future.

The Weekly Standard of December 21, 2009, reports that "a survey commissioned by the American Revolution Center" found that "when it came to a simple test of knowledge about the founding [of the United States of America], nearly 83 percent of . . . Americans failed.” knowledgeable defense of our founding document to be found anywhere.
In the face of this woeful ignorance, the Constitution of the United States of America is under an unprecedented attack by Barack Obama and his runaway Democrat Party, aided and abetted by the complicit mainstream media.

Yet with a few notable exceptions there is hardly any knowledgeable defense of our founding document to be found anywhere.

Not on radio or television. Not in the press. Not at the grassroots. Certainly not in academia. Nor, sadly, among most Republicans, Conservatives and even Libertarians. Most of the Media’s “instant,” pontificating constitutional experts, especially those on national television, do more harm than good because they spread disinformation that is neither knowledgeable nor principled. While many “tea party” activists and other patriots are valiantly trying to fight for core constitutional values, they’re disarmed because they have been taught little about American constitutional law. The fact is that everyone fighting for America today, in order to defend the Constitution, must know the answers to countless crucial questions.

…

Those who are committed to fighting for that future must acquire a basic understanding of the Constitution’s origins and birth, its written text, the manner in which it has been deliberately violated, and the consequences of how it has been misinterpreted by collectivists and statists.

Molotov Mitchell: Proof Positive – Time Machine

Might as well end the year dealing with the same question we were facing at the beginning  – is Barack Obama a natural born citizen?  Does Obama hold the US citizenship requirements of the United States Constitution?

The final installment in Molotov Mitchell’s Proof Positive series which questions Barack Obama’s citizenship qualifications.  This is not “birther” nonsense – this is serious stuff folks!

Terror Link: Northwest/Delta Flight 253 and Air France Flight 447

By Cassandra Effect, December 26, 2009 4:03 pm

So we know that a Muslim Al Qaeda Jihadist err, Nigerian Man, tried to detonate his explosives as the plane was landing

No one in the news media is asking  the obvious question:

Why didn’t Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab just go into the bathroom and set off his bomb in private without any chance of anyone seeing him?

But this question should be asked first:

If a plane blows up over the ocean and no one sees it does it make a sound?  How about  Air France Flight 447 in June?

Investigators have yet to pinpoint the cause of the disaster, although they suspect that a malfunction of the aircraft’s speed sensors may have contributed to the crash. A preliminary report published in July said an examination of the floating debris indicated that the plane had hit the water intact.

“We still don’t know what happened in the cockpit, and we will need to find and analyze the recorders to understand,” Mr. Troadec said at the agency’s offices in Le Bourget, near Paris. “Our knowledge of this accident does not allow us to develop a scenario.”

The current hypothesis for AF447 was that bad weather and lightning sent it out of control and into the sea.   Folks – let me tell you – planes get hit by lightning all the time – its not a big thing.   But if Al Qaeda had dropped Flight 447 out of the sky, and never go the CREDIT for their terror attack, can you imagine they might feel?  First, pissed that they did not get the credit for the attack, but secondly how thrilled they would be that whatever bombing apparatus they used on that plane had made it through security and HAD WORKED.

While the lame MSM babbles on about new terror threats, and new ways the terrorists are adapting to our security measures, my question is – who is to say this is latest terror attack is a new technique?

So back to the original question – why did he set off his device while the plane was preparing for landing?

So that people would KNOW this was a terror attack.

Al Qaeda Airline Terror Bomber Beaten Down by Passengers

By Cassandra Effect, December 25, 2009 8:20 pm

There still are more Todd Beamer’s (Lets Roll) in the world.  Thank G-d!

Two things jump out at me in this developing story from the Detroit News

“The suspect had been in a law enforcement intelligence database but was not on the government’s no-fly list, a law enforcement official told ABC.”

What the heck does it take for you to go from being on an “intelligence database” to get moved to the no-fly list??  Are we this lame about our own security?

“Two people noticed the attempt to ignite the substance and a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News.”

To be clear here, the Northwest Airbus 330 has a passenger capacity of 34 business class seats and 264 coach seats.  The terrorist was reported to be in row 19 <updated>.   There were 277 other passengers on board.  It is quite reasonable to believe that the coach section was near full.  The seat map of the Airbus 300 in coach is a 2-3-2 configuration.  However elite airline passenger often get last minute upgrades, so its possible the would-be bomber was in a “2″ section  with no one next to him.  Seat 19 is an over the wing seat, which, if his explosive has successfully gone off possible done fatal damage to the aircraft by igniting near the fuel tanks.

“”The president was notified of the incident this morning between 9:00 and 9:30 Hawaii time by the president’s military aide,” he said. “The president subsequently convened a secure conference call with John Brennan, his Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism adviser, and Denis McDonough, NSS chief of staff. He asked to arrange subsequent secure call and in that call instructed that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel.

The Department of Homeland Security said passengers might see additional screening measures on domestic and international flights because of the incident and urged travelers to report any suspicious activity or behavior to law enforcement officials.”

Let me get this straight – We are at Security Code ORANGE – a “High Risk of Terrorist Attacks.”  We -MIGHT- see additional screening measures?  So what could possibly differentiate Orange from Red which is a “Severe Risk of Terror Attacks”  Could it be they may actually screen for likely JIHADISTS????!!!!

UPDATE:  h/t Jawa Report

Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab was flying from Nigeria to the United States for a religious ceremony, according to his entry visa, which was issued June 16, 2008 and was good until June 12, 2010.

Name ANY religious ceremony that lasts 2 years?   WHAT ARE WE DOING??!??
