President Obama’s dubious embrace of “moral obligations”

By Cassandra Effect, August 20, 2009 2:09 pm

President Obama has declared that we must all fight for health care because it is a “moral obligation” (see Obama goes Atlas Shrugged in health care debate)

Since our Dear Leader is so focused on moral obligations I thought we could take a brief look at another  “moral” issue and see what his views have been:

Abortion: ” If you believe that life begins at conception, then I can’t change your mind.” (NY TIMES)

Ezekiel Emanuel’s Views on Stem Cell Research and Embryo Right to Life Issues

By Cassandra Effect, August 14, 2009 3:18 pm

Two weeks after Cassanda Effect reported on The Health Care Chart that Will Scare YOU to DEATH, the main stream media has woken up to his cold calculus, and are now DEFENDING it.

Let me be clear, the issue is not about Ezekiel Emanuel as a person.  He is a respected physician, his past work clearly advocates for people dying with dignity, and he seems like a thoughtful man.

The issue we face is the notion of the GOVERNMENT developinga process on health care rationing with consequences that are deeply disturbign to anyoen who has ever dealt with a government agency.

Zeke Emanuel’s ethical approach is focused on social benefits – he is a Utilitarian, the greatest good for the greatest number.

View a talk he gave on the ethics of stem cell research at the Aspen Institute on August 1st 2009 (two weeks ago) HERE.   Watch the video at the 45 minute mark to see his discussion on when an embryo has moral rights.

He states that you can’t understand the ethics until you understand the biology.  He acknowledges the embryo should be treated with special significance.   With respect and dignity.  But not in the same way we treat babies and adults.

When asked if an embryo has moral rights , he tries to sidestep the issue by asking “what does my view matter”.  He is the advisor to President Obama!  That is why it matters!

He doesn’t buy the essentialist argument that the embryo in “en-souled”

“We have a gradation over time – there is not a bright line”

And there lies the issue.  Moral Relativism and Utilitarian Moral Ethics versus the Sanctity of Life.

Abortion Parties – the moral relativism of the left

By Cassandra Effect, July 11, 2009 4:29 am

Its pretty much the complete opposite of a baby shower, well, except you still bring cash gifts and get to enjoy snacks.  The mere fact that people would feel the need to throw a PARTY to raise the funds for an abortion is close to as horrifying as the procedure itself.  Abortion should certainly not be considered an event to encourage a party – and if you need the money, I don’t think your friends are really such good friends if the only way they would be willing to help you out is for free beer and snacks.

Excerpts below - full disturbing story from Alternet HERE

“What are you going to do?” Unnecessary question, really — a conversational life vest, used when you’re sputtering for something to say. We knew the answer. Maggie, a 22-year-old college senior with no intention of bringing a child into the world yet, was going to have an abortion. She told us that she had already made up her mind; she had even determined the time, date and location. A better question might have been, “How are you going to pay for it?”

She answered that one before we had a chance to ask. “We’re having a party Friday to raise money,” Maggie said. “You guys are obviously invited.”

An abortion party. For the price of whatever we were willing to donate, she explained, we could partake of baked goods, beer and dancing. It was going to start at 10 p.m. at Maggie’s.

….

Ali and I arrived around 11, only half aware of the irony of being “late” to an abortion party. Walking in, we were bludgeoned with a blast of hot air, followed by the tangy stink of dance floor revelry. Someone had taken a red bed sheet and hung it below a light fixture to resemble a giant womb. Every so often, a dancer’s head or arm or dreadlock would brush against one of its smooth folds, creating a rippling effect. “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince was playing.
