The Ultimate Irony from Obama’s State of the Union Speech

By Cassandra Effect, January 28, 2010 9:55 pm

Of all the things that were wrong with Barack Obama’s SOTU speech yesterday, nothing could hold a candle to his tout the Stimulus Bill

“The plan that has made all of this possible, from the tax cuts to the jobs, is the Recovery Act. That’s right — the Recovery Act, also known as the stimulus bill. Economists on the left and the right say this bill has helped save jobs and avert disaster. But you don’t have to take their word for it. Talk to the small business in Phoenix that will triple its work force because of the Recovery Act. Talk to the window manufacturer in Philadelphia who said he used to be skeptical about the Recovery Act, until he had to add two more work shifts just because of the business it created.”

This window company he mentions is Serious Materials, which is a firm which has benefited from focused lobbying to get government money for the Stimulus money for “Weatherization” and   The Weatherization program is a simply a wealth transfer, income qualifed program

The irony is how this relates to Bastiat’s Broken Window Fallacy:  specifically – the tax money being used to “weatherize” homes and offer tax credits on replacement windows.  These tax credit are wealth transfers of taxpayers to individuals who purchase qualifying windows, and then ultimately a wealth transfer to the window company.   All well and good for the window company and the homeowner with the new windows, but a loss of wealth that could have been used for other things by all the other taxpayers.  Thus is the taxes were lowered, then the money may have been used to go out to dinner, buy a new TV, or anything else.   Read below to truly grasp the horror and irony of President Obama’s examples:

I. THE BROKEN WINDOW

Have you ever witnessed the anger of the good shopkeeper, James B., when his careless son happened to break a square of glass? If you have been present at such a scene, you will most assuredly bear witness to the fact, that every one of the spectators, were there even thirty of them, by common consent apparently, offered the unfortunate owner this invariable consolation – “It is an ill wind that blows nobody good. Everybody must live, and what would become of the glaziers if panes of glass were never broken?”

Now, this form of condolence contains an entire theory, which it will be well to show up in this simple case, seeing that it is precisely the same as that which, unhappily, regulates the greater part of our economical institutions.

Suppose it cost six francs to repair the damage, and you say that the accident brings six francs to the glazier’s trade – that it encourages that trade to the amount of six francs – I grant it; I have not a word to say against it; you reason justly. The glazier comes, performs his task, receives his six francs, rubs his hands, and, in his heart, blesses the careless child. All this is that which is seen.

But if, on the other hand, you come to the conclusion, as is too often the case, that it is a good thing to break windows, that it causes money to circulate, and that the encouragement of industry in general will be the result of it, you will oblige me to call out, “Stop there! your theory is confined to that which is seen; it takes no account of that which is not seen.”

It is not seen that as our shopkeeper has spent six francs upon one thing, he cannot spend them upon another. It is not seen that if he had not had a window to replace, he would, perhaps, have replaced his old shoes, or added another book to his library. In short, he would have employed his six francs in some way, which this accident has prevented.

Let us take a view of industry in general, as affected by this circumstance. The window being broken, the glazier’s trade is encouraged to the amount of six francs; this is that which is seen. If the window had not been broken, the shoemaker’s trade (or some other) would have been encouraged to the amount of six francs; this is that which is not seen.

And if that which is not seen is taken into consideration, because it is a negative fact, as well as that which is seen, because it is a positive fact, it will be understood that neither industry in general, nor the sum total of national labour, is affected, whether windows are broken or not.

Now let us consider James B. himself. In the former supposition, that of the window being broken, he spends six francs, and has neither more nor less than he had before, the enjoyment of a window.

In the second, where we suppose the window not to have been broken, he would have spent six francs on shoes, and would have had at the same time the enjoyment of a pair of shoes and of a window.

Now, as James B. forms a part of society, we must come to the conclusion, that, taking it altogether, and making an estimate of its enjoyments and its labours, it has lost the value of the broken window.

When we arrive at this unexpected conclusion: “Society loses the value of things which are uselessly destroyed;” and we must assent to a maxim which will make the hair of protectionists stand on end – To break, to spoil, to waste, is not to encourage national labour; or, more briefly, “destruction is not profit.”

What will you say, Monsieur Industriel — what will you say, disciples of good M. F. Chamans, who has calculated with so much precision how much trade would gain by the burning of Paris, from the number of houses it would be necessary to rebuild?

I am sorry to disturb these ingenious calculations, as far as their spirit has been introduced into our legislation; but I beg him to begin them again, by taking into the account that which is not seen, and placing it alongside of that which is seen. The reader must take care to remember that there are not two persons only, but three concerned in the little scene which I have submitted to his attention. One of them, James B., represents the consumer, reduced, by an act of destruction, to one enjoyment instead of two. Another under the title of the glazier, shows us the producer, whose trade is encouraged by the accident. The third is the shoemaker (or some other tradesman), whose labour suffers proportionably by the same cause. It is this third person who is always kept in the shade, and who, personating that which is not seen, is a necessary element of the problem. It is he who shows us how absurd it is to think we see a profit in an act of destruction. It is he who will soon teach us that it is not less absurd to see a profit in a restriction, which is, after all, nothing else than a partial destruction. Therefore, if you will only go to the root of all the arguments which are adduced in its favour, all you will find will be the paraphrase of this vulgar saying – What would become of the glaziers, if nobody ever broke windows?

Open Letter to The President and Congress on Dissent

By Cassandra Effect, August 11, 2009 6:42 am

Powerful letter from Cassandra Effect reader and Patriot Erick Beckerwerth slamming those elected officials who seek to silence dissent.

This is an open letter to the President, all members of the U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate.  I Eric Paul Beckerwerth residing in Wylie Texas do hereby put on notice, any and all, elected officials who wish to silence our dissent.   We will NOT be silenced!  This letter will be served to the Executive branch and all members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.  I will also send copies to selected media outlets, hoping they have the courage, patriotism, and journalistic integrity to publish.

In the past couple of weeks it appears the Executive branch along with select members of the U.S. House have insinuated that, we the people, should keep silent unless our political opinions and discourse are in line with the CURRENT majority party and their proposed legislation.  I have included a couple of notable quotes.

“There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.”-www.whitehouse.gov

“I don’t want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking.  I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess”-President Barack Obama

I would assume the above criticism does not include select Democrat representatives who pushed through sub-prime lending standards resulting in the collapse of the mortgage market.  Let us dispense with the finger pointing as there is plenty of blame for both parties.

Let me remind you Mr. President that we live in a Representative Republic.  Let me refresh your memory, sir, and any members of Congress who do not understand exactly what this means.  It means that I Eric Beckerwerth along with my fellow citizens elect a certain individual to be our voice, and our vote in the House of Representatives and Senate.  When you tell these people to “not do a lot of talking” and “to get out of the way” you are in essence telling me and my fellow citizens to shut up.  I did not vote for you and you ARE NOT my voice.  My voice is Congressman Ralph Hall, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and Senator John Cornyn.  I understand that there are differing political opinions and ideas, which give rise to our different representatives.  Each of whom possess a wide array of differing ideology.  I do not pretend to believe, nor would I necessarily want, all voices in Congress to be the same.  It is what has made this nation so great for over 200 years.  It is this very thing which was used to weave the fabric of our nation, and its founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  The very same Constitution you, President Barack Obama, promised to uphold and defend on January 20, 2009.

You may not like dissent, sir, you may not agree with it.  But it is up to you to defend it.  If you will not defend it, then I ask you, what kind of nation have we become, and under whose leadership did it “change”?  I do not agree with your politics or ideas but I would never try and silence them.

When a certain individual in a prominent leadership position within the U.S. House of Representatives refers to dissent at Town Hall meeting as a “Mob”, and accuse them of wearing “swastikas” , it is highly irresponsible, verging on dangerous.

I think they’re Astroturf… You be the judge. “They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare.”-Nancy Pelosi

I would not begin to insinuate the Democratic Party is like the Nazis of the 1930’s and 1940’s.  However, since a certain leader within the Democratic Party felt obligated to equate those at town hall meetings with the Nazis I thought I would give all members just a few items from the Nazi platform.

  • Against Capitalism and Big Bank
  • Against all tobacco products
  • Supported Abortion and euthanasia
  • Supported a Nationalized healthcare system

Which party most resembles this ideology?  I would like to stress again that I am not comparing the Democrats of the United States to the Nazi party.  However, as you can see, it is real easy to throw political stones to fit ones political agenda.  This needs to stop!

We are not a nation of political parties, rather one nation, under God, and united under a central Government.  At present it would appear you want to defend only the rights of those with your political ideology while diminishing the rights of those who do not.

President Obama you are one of the biggest advocates for community organizing.  You lavished high praise upon those involved in your election.  Currently, you give speeches asking the people to organize and go door to door in favor of your healthcare.  Yet the very thing for which you commend your supporters, you are condemning.  Town Hall meetings bring our voice to each of our respective ELECTED representatives, who in turn carry their vote, our vote, back to Washington D.C.  When individual Americans believe their elected officials are seizing their rights, and assuming power not granted by the Constitution it is their duty, your duty, to make their voices heard, whether you agree or NOT.

We must debate, sir, on the merits and the facts of any bill, and of any idea.  If we believe an opposing point of view is clouded in lies we should not attack with accusations.  Rather, we should debate with civility, without accusations, and without fear of suppression.  I, and I hope my fellow citizens have had enough.   All we want are the facts.  It is your duty, our duty, to expose any misconceptions or lies with concrete facts.  Just as in a court of law both sides present their facts and let the jury, in this case the American people, decide.  If you believe there are lies, I tell you to put forth the truth.  I think of a quote from Galileo “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them”.  I promise you if you put them out there the American people WILL discover them.  My fellow citizens are smart, perceptive, and discerning .  It is time to stop the accusation, the name calling, and the intimidation and present the facts.  Let the American People decide for themselves what the truth is.  After all, it is Saul Alinsky who once said

“My only fixed truth is a belief in people, a conviction that if people have the opportunity to act freely and the power to control their own destinies, they’ll generally reach the right decisions.”

I commend you sir on your election to the office of the President of the United States.  However, it is time to start acting Presidential and stop using the power of the office and the bully pulpit to control the lives and destinies of the people of the United States of America.

Respectfully,

Eric Beckerwerth

House Republicans Fail Again

By Cassandra Effect, August 1, 2009 3:33 pm

The House Republicans failed again in delivering fiscal conservatism to their constituents.

On Friday, the House voted to add another $2 Billion of money for the so called “Cash for Clunkers” bill

House Vote 682 had 316 yes votes, which INCLUDED 77 Republicans!  Only 284 votes are needed to pass a house vote.  Two chicken Republican reps voted Present!

Use the  NY TIMES Interactive Map to see how YOUR Rep voted!

Its no surprise – the reasons are clearly reported on here:  Why the Cash for Clunker Bill will continue to expand

This is why the Republican party must be dismantled  – read here for more THE GOP is a Dead Brand

Why the Cash for Clunker Bill will continue to expand

The funding for this bill will grow and grow and grow.  Why?  Because EVERYONE stands to gain on this with no obvious victim.  To wit:

  1. People and Businesses replacing older cars get free money (up to $4500!)
  2. Car Dealers see an increase in current sales (at the expense of future sales, but who cares about that right now)
  3. The Main Stream Media sees an increase in advertising revenue from manufacturers and dealers (The Auto business is one of the top ad categories)
  4. Politicians get a chance to give the “People” Free Money and collect votes
  5. Auto Unions see the Government doing “something” to help them

So what’s not to love?

Well, let’s see………..

  • it’s not the role of the Federal Government to reapportion taxpayer money to fund a SINGLE taxpayer’s discretionary purchases.  And yes, a new car is discretionary.
  • People who previously bought more fuel efficient vehicles and who wish to replace them get no incentive.  Only those who bought worse fuel economy vehicles stand to benefit.  I hope you didn’t “go green” too long ago!
  • DESTROYING the “clunkers” puts increased pricing pressure on older, cheaper vehicles for those who may only be able to only afford a used car.
  • DESTROYING the clunkers is not very green, since the cars may have plenty of useful service life (the trade in vehicle may be only a year old!) and can contribute as parts cars for the used market.
  • And finally – REPLACING a clunker is not the most efficient use of financial resources…follow the math…

You have a Used car that is fully paid off.  Lets say it gets 10 miles per gallon.  You decide to buy a new car that gets 30 miles per gallon.  You drive 15,000 miles per year.  We will also assume gas costs $2.50 per gallon.  We’ll say it costs $1000 per year to maintain the clunker and $100 a year for the new car.  Insurance on the clunker is $400 and $800 on the new car.  Well say the new car costs $20,000, and we’ll assume you pay straight cash for it.

Scenario 1 – Keep the Used Car (costs over 5 years)

Fuel cost  = $18750

Maintainance Costs = $5000

Insurance = $2000

5 year cost of ownership = $25,750

Scenario 2 – Buy New Car and replace Clunker

Fuel Cost = $6250

Maintainance Costs = $500

Insurance = $4000

Car Cost = $20,000

5 year cost of ownership = $30,750

USED CAR WINS by $5000.  And we used a really unfavorable mpg comparison that was skewed strongly to the New car.

This example does not account for time value of money, and it does not even account for the interest payments that most people would pay financing the car.  Nor do I even bother to calculate the sales tax or ad valorem taxes that would be due on the new car.

So NORMALLY it would be in a person’s best financial interest to keep the Used Car.  So what are we doing?  We’re giving people up to $4500 to offset what the MARKET should be doing on its own.  All on your dime.

It truly makes you a sucker if you DON”T go out and buy a car…so sad…..

Colin Powell defends Sotomayor

By Cassandra Effect, July 5, 2009 12:29 pm

Will Michael Steele please publicly TAKE AWAY this mans Republican membership card? For Pete’s sake already!  Full story from Newsmax HERE

“What we can’t continue to have is to have somebody like a Judge Sotomayor … called a racist, a reverse racist and she ought to withdraw her nomination because we’re mad at her,” Powell said in an interview broadcast Sunday on “State of the Union” on CNN.

Powell said Sotomayor has “an open and liberal bent of mind, but that’s not disqualifying. But she seems to have a judicial record that seems to be balanced and tries to follow the law.”

Tries – what a nice word – how about tries and fails to follow the law?  Ricci case is Exhibit A, Four out of Six of her decisions that have come before the SCOTUS have been Overturned.

Powell, a Republican who supported Obama, said his party still is not sensitive enough toward minorities.

The MSM will continue to leverage his “Republican” credentials against us until we kick him out of the party!  What the heck does “Sensitivity” mean?  Different rule of law for minorities?  guess what – Caucasians will be a minority as soon as 2042!  So will Republicans become insensitive to themselves?  This is an issue of Principles and Values folks, not Race or ethnicity.

He noted that Obama had a significant advantage with Hispanics and African-Americans in the November elections. He criticized Republicans who are not elected to office and “immediately shout racism” against Sotomayor, while accusing Powell of supporting Obama because both men are black.

“We still have a problem,” he said.

Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has called Powell “just another liberal,” said he should become a Democrat and charged that Powell endorsed Obama based on race. Powell said Sunday that Limbaugh “doesn’t decide who I am or what I am no more than I decide who he is or what he is.

Gee – I think I’ll start calling myself a Democrat and we’ll see how far that gets me…….

Colin Powell: Conservative Quisling

By Cassandra Effect, July 4, 2009 12:37 pm

Quisling Colin Powell continues to pretend he is a conservative and a Republican.  In an Washington Post story today about a CNN interview,  Powell suggest he an advisor to Obama, and DOES NOT actually object to the policy and programs Obama is trying to undertake, rather that he is trying too many AT ONE TIME.  Read his words carefully my friends – he is working as a stooge – allowing the media to suggest that Obama’s policies are actually favored by some Conservatives, and that it’s merely a matter of approach to completing them.

We need to revoke this man’s Republican card, or do as I suggested HERE and start a new Party – the FREEDOM Party.

Someone please tell me what is the opposite of a “hard line fiscal fiscal conservative.”  The vocabulary of the political discourse in our country if fascinating to me, and I have truly struggled with how the media would describe a free spending, uncontrolled liberal, because I am not convinced they can.

The below quote from the article sums up the BS that is Colin Powell – Democrat in Republican clothing.

Mr. Powell said he has been in touch with Mr. Obama regularly and recently.

“I don’t insert myself, but we stay in touch,” he said.

Mr. King prompted Mr. Powell’s comments by showing him footage of the former general’s comments at the 1996 Republican Convention in San Diego, where Mr. Powell talked about his opposition to big government.

“The federal government has become too large and too intrusive in our lives,” Mr. Powell said then. “We can no longer afford solutions to our problems that result in more entitlements, higher taxes to pay for them, more bureaucracy to run them and fewer results to show for it.”

Mr. Powell said that he still believes what he said then, but that he would put it in different terms now.

“I don’t like slogans anymore like ‘limited government.’ That’s not the right answer. The right answer is: Give me a government that works,” he said. “Keep it as small as possible. Keep the tax burden on the American people as small as possible. But at the same time, have government that is solving the problems of the people.”

Paging Mark Sanford – The party’s not over, you just can’t stay here

By Cassandra Effect, June 30, 2009 3:25 am

“The question is, what do I learn from it and what do others learn from it?”

Typical of all politicians, SC Gov. Mark Sanford tries to reframe the discussion around his lack of integrity.

The question really is – How can he restore the trust that South Carolinians had in him, and how can people have faith in someone who can’t even be true to his own family.  Until you figure that out, step out of the public arena.

The public has a right to expect a high level of integrity from their elected officials.    If they can’t at least get that, then what should they expect?

Oh wait -I know – more of the same.
